Kansas City's Super Bowl defense faces a setback as star tight end Travis Kelce is ruled out.

Kelce will sit out the 2023 NFL Kickoff Game against the Detroit Lions due to a knee injury sustained earlier this week

according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport's report on Thursday. He was subsequently listed as inactive for the game.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid explained, "He just wasn't feeling right, so I wasn't going to put him out there with that.

Kelce and Reid had an honest conversation about his condition, leading to the decision not to play him. "Just not enough time there," Reid added.

Initially described as a hyperextended knee, the injury was later classified as a bone bruise by Rapoport and NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.

Fortunately, it is not expected to be a long-term issue.

This marks the first game Kelce, an eight-time Pro Bowl tight end, will miss due to injury since his rookie season in 2013.
