On the second day of placement, LG Korea, Konica Minolta, Ola, Deloitte, Walmart, Adobe and Bajaj companies conducted a written and interview process for the students. A total of 147 students got jobs on the second day, of which 8 were placed at overseas locations.
As per their policy, IIT Kharagpur has decided not to reveal the high packages in the placement as the institution is of the view that such publicity of packages may affect the value of national placements over international placements and also the core jobs over finance and consulting jobs.
The Career Development Centre spokesperson stated that data analytics and software were the two sectors that attracted maximum jobs this year. The institute explores various strategies to engage with the industrial sector beyond the recruitment process. Students of IIT Kharagpur gain experience from internships and learn about the importance of core engineering sectors at open workshops.
IIT Kharagpur also broke its tradition by allowing PSUs and Navratna companies such as ISRO and ONGC to recruit the students. ISRO and ONGC hired 13 students in the first phase. The institute expects more PSUs to visit the campus to hire more students.
The previous year, out of 594 undergraduate students who enrolled for campus placements, 492 were successfully placed in various companies. The rest of the students either decided to pursue higher studies or initiate their startups.
Joint Entrance Examination – Gateway to IIT Kharagpur
The only channel through which you can secure a seat at any IIT is the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) exam. JEE comprises of two separate examination stages, JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
JEE Main is the first stage examination, which is just the qualifying parameter to appear in JEE Advanced. Note that your JEE Main score holds no value in the counseling procedure of the IITs. The final exam that gives you the liberty to choose a seat at a top-ranked IIT is JEE Advanced. The better you score in JEE Advanced, the better are your chances of securing a seat at IIT Kharagpur.
The difficulty level of JEE can be understood with the fact that total 1,186,454 applicants took part in JEE Main in 2017 and finally only 9,784 of them got the admissions to the various IITs. This makes the selection ratio only around 0.008 and hence JEE is considered one amongst the world’s toughest entrance examinations.
Fabulous Placements
A good job is never a big concern for an optimistic and aspiring IIT Kharagpur student because there is always a big queue of the world-leading organizations that seek a chance to pick the most appropriate students to fasten their businesses.

However, the package and placement vary from year to year, based on the general trend in the economy. Students of IIT Kharagpur have even got jobs with initial packages of around INR 1 crore per annum.
International Ranking
IITs are counted amongst the most reputed and top engineering institutes not only in India but across the globe. The ranking is calculated based on various parameters such as the difficulty level of the entrance exam, selection ratio, cutoffs, and placements.
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) issues an annual ranking of all the famous institutions across the world. It is a matter of pride for us that 7 IITs in India found their place in Asia’s top 100 institutes of the QS rank list.
IIT Kharagpur has been listed amongst these. The prestigious institute has received the 150 ranks at the QS World Ranking 2017. Additionally, it was also ranked at the 62 positions in Asia’s best institutes.
Focused Placement Training for the Students
IIT Kharagpur conducts various placement training sessions and workshops for their students to prepare them on various job assuring areas. These include resume making, communication skills, presentation skills, interview skills, problem-solving skills, case workshops, and multiple mock placement interviews.
The rationale behind these placement workshops is to assure 100% of jobs to the IIT Kharagpur students who register at the institute’s placement cell. Students enjoy attending these sessions and acknowledge the cell’s contribution, once they get the desired job.
IIT Kharagpur Develops Inventers for the Society
The students of IIT Kharagpur invent many live projects during their academics as well as post completing their studies. Even the faculty members of the institution carry out inventions. For instance, IIT Kharagpur has collaborated with Rochester University to open up the development of quantum devices.
The faculty of IIT Kharagpur performed research in collaboration with the University of Rochester and International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru for futuristic technology development. It is surely a path-breaking research that has opened up possibilities for the development of quantum devices.
Professor Sajal Dhara from the Department of Physics at IIT Kharagpur along with his collaborators has discovered negative mass particles of polaritons that are composed of half-light and half-matter. The mass of such created polaritons is lighter than the mass of an electron by a factor of 0.00001. These particles will lead to a giant leap towards futuristic technology development and help in developing advanced devices. The research was also featured in the esteemed Nature Physics journal in their October 2017 issue.
It is expected that with this invention, the speed and storage capacity of the smart electronic devices will be increased to multi-folds. The speakers of Rochester University state that the IITians would be the world leaders in the future.
This project received funding from MHRD, International Society of Invertebrate Reproduction and Development (ISIRD) and Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB).
